TROPICAL FISH

Fish might become bruised while traveling. Liquid healing agents to put into the water are available at pet shops.

Plants and snails from the aquarium can be carried along in plastic bags with a small amount of water. Empty and dry the aquarium before packing it carefully; you might also leave the packing of the aquarium to the movers.

Tropical fish are susceptible to sudden changes in water temperature and overcrowding. It probably will not be necessary to feed the fish. Many species can go without food for as long as a week with no ill effects. You will need to open the container every four hours or so to freshen the air supply.

When transporting tropical fish by car, it is best to move them from the aquarium to smaller unbreakable containers that can easily be handled.

You can also put the fish in a leak-proof plastic bag one-third filled with water. Place this bag first in a similar outer bag to prevent accidental leakage, and then in a sturdy container like a picnic cooler. This is advisable for short journeys. On longer trips, such packing might turn out to be awkward when it comes to aerating the water.

If the fish must be moved in the aquarium itself, remove aerators, hoods, rocks, or anything else that might shift and could break the glass. Transport the aquarium half-full of water; the remaining water should be taken along in a separate container, should it be required to change the water in the aquarium. Covering the top of the aquarium with a plastic film helps avoid spillage. Make sure the bottom of the aquarium is solidly supported, and if possible, pad the sides with foam.

Take the water removed from the aquarium in a separate container.

Replace water, fish and aerator as soon as possible upon arrival at destination.

New water may need treatment with neutralizers before use; these may be purchased at most pet shops. Add the new water a little at a time, letting the fish adjust gradually to the new water.
