PLANTS, BIRDS AND OTHERS

Moving plants:

Plants are naturally somewhat easier to handle when moving; however, there are some points you should bear in mind:

Some potted plants are susceptible to shock when moving. Exposure to temperatures below 35 or above 95 degree Fahrenheit for more than any hour can kill many plants.

Most houseplants can survive for a week or so without water, provided they are moist when placed in cartons.

They can also tolerate darkness for a similar period, other conditions being favorable.

However, when re-exposing them to light, do so gradually- sudden exposure to sun and light could lead to wilting or scalding.

For ease of transport, you can take cuttings of your plant, if possible. Cuttings may survive for several days in a bag containing damp vermiculite, peat moss, or prelate.

Birds and small caged animals:

Birds and small animals like gerbils and hamsters can generally be transported in the cage they use at home.

Birds tend to get stressed by travel. They are easily frightened, as well as being very susceptible to drafts and sudden changes in temperature. Keep the cage covered while on the road; this helps keep birds calm. However, make sure it receives enough ventilation while protecting it from drafts.

Remove the water container from the cage to avoid spills.

Small pets tend to dehydrate quickly, especially during hot weather. Give them fresh water at every stop. Feed at usual time.

Unusual pets

Many states have specific regulations covering the entry of "wild" animals like monkeys, boa constrictors and other snakes, alligators and lizards. You would need to contact the regulatory agency of the destination state before moving to find out if your pet will be admitted, and under what conditions.
