- A decision should be made beforehand as to whether all the items will be handled by the moving company, or entirely by yourself. For example valuables like jewelery etc should be handled essentially by you.
- You will have to make sure that any minor or small repairs have not been left out or overlooked.
- The boxes which will be shipped out can be marked as so as to ensure that the handling will be done accordingly:
- "Fragile",
- "Do Not Load"
- "Load Last"
- Appliances: The refrigerator, freezer and stove should be cleaned out at least 24 hours before moving to let them air out. To remove any odors, baking soda can be used for immediate effect.
- The lawn should be mown and trimmed a last time before the move.
- You should prepare in your suitcase the items you will need while your goods are in transit.
- You should take along a "first night back" and "ready box" which should contain the clothing and cosmetics, which you will need for the first night in your new home. See "first night bag guide" for more information and tips on the same.
- The mover's agent should know the address and phone number of your new home. The movers should also be aware of your contact information that can be used to reach you in case of emergencies.
- The methods of payment to the moving agent should be taken care of before the actual moving process
- Your insurance that you have chosen with your mover's agent should be taken care of. You can refer to the "Insurance and Liability" guide for more information.
- Following need to be done before the actual move:
- Any pending dry cleaning and laundry should be picked up.
- Settle any outstanding bills
- Borrowed videos and library books should be returned without delay
- Appliances which will be moved to the new house should be properly disconnected and cleaned thoroughly
- Keys, alarm codes and garage door remote controls should be ready for hand over to the new owner or real estate agent.
- If the home which is to be left without any inhabitants, the police should be informed about the same
