you can call few companies and ask them to provide an on site estimate and check the BBB for their records

Hi, I am moving from CT to Norway and have heard people mention that one of the most in-expensive ways, is to get a POD delivered to your home, pack it yourself, and have the company come pick it up and have it shipped. Do you know of any companies that might offer such services?

packing your self your good can save you few dollars, however for the insurance purposes you will be cover only for "total lost" and not "all risk".

you can take the chance, but I can not recommend that - what you can do is to pack all non breakable things yourself and to let the movers pack the breakable shipment. in that case you will be cover for the risk part of the shipment.
